Planetary Spirits

I know in this technological age, astrology has been trying to prove itself in the scientific community, but I also notice that many astrologers could care less.

There is something special about astrology. Astrology may be scientific, after all the Sun really does exist, and it is measurable, but astrology is also spiritual, mystical, and magical.

I'm having an email conversation about archangels and fixed stars and it made me realize that the angelic connection in astrology is underground and secretive. It is rare to pick up an astrology "cookbook" or textbook that mentions angels. There may be a definition here and there that connects a fixed star to an angel or archangel, but that is rare.

I want the magic back, I want to talk more about the planetary spirits, and I think they want to be recognized as well, and I know many people are hungry for this information.

If anyone has an experience they want to share, or information in this area, please drop me a line or mention something in the comment section. Meanwhile, I'll keep digging around and meditating on this subject. I know Alice Bailey's books are chock full of references to Planetary Spirits. Another good author is Elbert Benjamine (C.C. Zain) of the Church of Light.

Neptune Gets Phishy

The Saturn opposition to Neptune, which will be in effect until 6/25/07, brings all sorts of deception in business practices. Many of you may have heard of Phishing (pronounced like the word fishing). Here are some important tips, so you won’t be caught. Fishing is related to Neptune, and misusing phishing for business success is so like an unscrupulous Saturn.

Don't Get Caught by "Phishing" Emails

What is a "Phishing" email?

"Phishing" emails are emails that appear to be from authentic companies but are not. The goal of these types of emails is to trick you into giving out some of your personal information.

Be cautious when you receive an email with links prompting you to log onto a website. Phishing scams can take the form of emails or pop-up windows that are crafted to trick you into revealing your social security number, account log in, or password information.

Generally, they'll say something like "someone tried accessing your account, please log in to verify your information."

The perpetrators have become very sophisticated in recent years. Some of these phony emails include graphic logos and some content from of legitimate company websites. Sometimes the actual employee names may be listed as well making the emails look no different from an email from the real actual company.
Ebay, Paypal, and banks seem to be the favorite targets of scammers.

I work and live online and still have to remind myself of a few golden rules when going through my email inbox, especially when I'm tired.

If you do not recognize the sender of the email - be skeptical and cautious (businesses can't always do this obviously)

If you open a suspicious email accidentally, avoid clicking on any links. By clicking on the email links, you may possibly trigger the installation of some spyware onto your computer if the sender is a fake.

You can download a free copy of Ad-aware (by Lavasoft) that will zap that type of intrusion among others. Normally, I would put a link to the site but I want to try to prove a point and give you some practice. Just do a google search for "lavasoft".

Another way you can tell if a web site link is legitimate is if you hover the mouse cursor over the link and see the address that shows up on the bottom left corner of your screen. It should start with "http://www.companyname.com". If it does not, it may be redirecting you to a fictitious site.

In a case where you are unsure, it's best to type the website URL directly into your browser (e.g. http://www.ebay.com/), or use a search engine.

Scammers sometimes randomly generate email addresses, which explains how you may have received fake emails that appear to be from banks you don't know or have never used. Email addresses can also be gathered from online chat rooms, online auctions, directories or web pages. You should be aware that just because the return email address is legitimate, doesn't mean the whole email is.

If you are familiar with the sender of the email and are being prompted to log onto your account, it is always better to go to their web site directly or use a bookmark than use the link.
You should still be able to find out if there is a legitimate issue by visiting the website directly and going to your account area.

Generally, legitimate banks don't email you asking you to update your account information or log in - this is the #1 Phishing scam I have seen to date. Phishing emails from "Fifth Third Bank", "Chase", or "Bank of America" may show up in your inbox one day.

The Paypal "update your account information" email is another very common phishing scam that many people have seen. Again, go to the web site directly; Type it in your browser. It's best to never provide ANY personal information after clicking a link in an email.

I don't want to scare anyone from opening their email, but many people are not informed, which makes them very susceptible to these high tech schemes.

My word of advice, is to be cautious about any unexpected emails asking you to verify any personal information or sensitive account details.

I'll add to Bob's comments; never fill out anything by link even if it appears to be someone you know, don't open email from someone you don't know, and watch out for filling out a survey by email. A great percentage of these emails appear to be coming from within the US, but they are often sources out of the country.

This is not a promotion for ink jets. I use their ink, but I do not get compensation for using their article. I just think it’s important to know about phishing.

Vacant Signs During the Year

We notice the signs the planets are transiting, but rarely think about the signs that are empty.

For instance, Cancer is not occupied by a planet for most of the year. A few years ago Saturn was in Cancer, so we had Cancer all year round. At that time home, family, and patriotism were on our mind, and in the news. Now that Saturn has moved into Leo, the war is no longer a matter of patriotism, and news of home or family have been superseded by the latest Hollywood crotch scandal, which star or musician is in rehab, or Anna Nicole Smith. Right after her death, news about Anna Nicole got more hits than the Iraq war. Movie star and rock musicians probably ran neck and neck with the recent stock market dive. (That's Saturn in Leo for you; Leo rules both entertainment and speculation.)

For those of you who cherish home and family, Cancer is always occupied in the summer when the Sun, Mercury, and Venus move into Cancer. And we must not forget Mars. Mars will retrograde in the sign Cancer in November, so we'll get a taste of home, family, and patriotism mid November through January. Mars goes retrograde 11/15/07 EST at 12 Cancer 27 until 1/31/08.

The signs that have been occupied all year for the past few years are Sagittarius, Aquarius, and Pisces. Saturn goes into Virgo in September on 9/2/07 EDT, and we lose Leo all year, getting over two years of Virgo. Jupiter goes into Capricorn 12/15/07 EST and we get twelve months of Capricorn.

Virgo concerns matters that have to do with health, service, the military, police, co-workers, pets, efficiency, day-to-day routines, criticism, perfectionism, and working towards self-esteem.

Capricorn is related to matters of business, authority, practicality and economy, life lessons, ambition, attainment, status, caution, calculation, convention, and structure.

Jupiter entering Capricorn paves the way for Pluto in Capricorn.

Oh SHEAT!!

One thing that consistently draws my attention when I read an Aries ingress chart is the fixed star Sheat.

An Aries ingress chart is the chart for entrance of the Sun into the sign Aries, the Vernal Equinox, such as the one on March 20, 2007, EDT. The Aries ingress is considered by most astrologers as the start of the astrological year, and thus very important for the next twelve months.

Fixed stars are not used by many modern western astrologers. Prior to the discovery of the three outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto), astrologers depended on the fixed stars for prediction. Just like the planets, fixed stars are benefic or malicious. Fixed stars move very slowly, many move about one degree every 100 hundred years.

The fixed star Sheat, a magnitude 3.27, giant white star, 98 light years away, is located in the constellation Aquarius, at the right shinbone of the water bearer. It is also known as Skat, or Scheat. It is of the nature of Saturn and Jupiter

For several years, I’ve noticed that the Sun has been conjuncting the fixed star Sheat whenever it enters Aries. This is not a good omen. Sheat is a nasty fixed star. It has to do with ambition, vanity, poor judgment, ships, weather, and oceans. I’ve heard so many classical astrologers bellow, “Oh SH_T”, when they see Sheat in a chart, that we started calling it the “Oh SH_T” star. To a classical astrologer it means something is shipwrecked.

The only method of astrology that consistently uses fixed stars is horary. In horary, a chart is cast for the time of a question. One of the foremost horary astrologers, William Lilly, the author of Christian Astrology, consistently used fixed stars. If Sheat turned up in a chart, it was an indication of a real shipwreck. His business was often conducted in waterfront taverns.

Is this a portent of difficult times on our planet? I have heard that the wonders of the New Age and peace will not prevail until after 2100. Is it just a coincidence that the Sun started its conjunction with Sheat in 1979? It seems that the "sh_t" hit the fan around that time, and hasn’t stopped. As of 2005, Sheat was 29 Pisces 26. Right now, it moves around 1 degree 23 minutes per 100 years, so the Aries ingress will be conjunct Sheat for 135 years, from 1979 to 2116.

If you use fixed stars, they will be reliable. They have been around for thousands of years, and most will be around for thousands more. The scientists of the IAU have no control over the fixed stars, they are what they are, and they cannot be demoted.

Where is Sheat in your chart? If Sheat is a making difficult aspect to a planet, have you had any wrecks related to the house in which it's located?

The Solar Eclipse in Pisces

I want to add my two cents about the Solar Eclipse on Sunday (Monday in many countries). The eclipse will be on 3/18/07 at 10:43 PM EDT. Click here to convert to your local time.

A Few Observations

1. The eclipse is at 28 Pisces 07

Pisces is related to issues of spirituality, escapism, illusion and delusion, and water, especially the ocean. The last degrees of a sign always indicate a completion, and tying up loose ends.

Rehab has been in the news quite a bit lately, someone even wrote a song about it. "Go to Rehab ... no, no, no." Within a short time, these people are out of rehab and back into escapism. Rehab is not the final answer, it's only a start, and in fact, it's getting to be a publicity stunt, (A Pisces delusion). Anyway, we will complete matters related to Pisces. Maybe we are even completing the Age of Pisces.

2. Uranus is forming a T-square with Jupiter and the Nodes.

Uranus in Pisces less than one degree from the nodes, is considered to be in the "degree of the nodes", which is not a good thing. Ancient astrologers called this a portent of doom. We'll have to wait and see. Since Uranus is involved, whatever happens will be unexpected, and unpredictable. The t-square with Jupiter adds fuel to the flames, but the water of Pisces makes it all go up in smoke.

Jupiter is sextile Mars and Neptune, and some of the pressure will be released through Mars and Neptune. Neptune is a water planet and will cool down both fire planets, Jupiter and Mars, and help avert the damage. Neptune in Aquarius will get the entire world involved. Sometimes it takes a jolt to bring peace, or to reach a completion.

3.Pluto is Square the Eclipse

This also is a difficult position. However, Pluto is transformation, and sometimes we have to be forced to make changes. Between the jolt of Uranus and the intensity of Pluto, something has to give.

Bigger is Better, More is Magnificent

...or so Sagittarius believes

On many astrology blogs I find the phrase, ‘this is the big one’, or the words ‘unprecedented success and joy’ to describe an upcoming astrological event. I’ve been seeing these phrases or similar ones quite often lately. What will we read when Pluto goes into Capricorn? Will we be told that we’ll have less of something when an aspect or eclipse happens? Since Saturn is the ruler of Capricorn, will we see more words of loss, limitation, boundaries, difficulties, or responsibility?

I’ve heard so many times that an eclipse, aspect, or retrograde will bring astounding, wonderful, changes. This is becoming redundant. I hope we don’t take this for granted or start to disbelieve astrology. It’s hard to see the benefits when the TV is drowning us in negativity.

I find over embellishment frequently in New Age writing. It’s just like Sagittarius to want to uplift people, to say things that make you feel good all the time, to say that there are good times around the corner. I know one spiritual author, (not an astrologer) who has been saying we are turning the corner in our evolution, and she’s been saying this for several years. Actually, every year she says this is the year that the big change is happening. Each year she phrases it a little differently, but still means the same thing. Maybe that's why she has fewer students; they finally gave up.

My point is that Pluto in Sagittarius has brought a desire for optimism, abundance, and big things, (cars, money, and homes). This desire is reflected in more than just material things. This desire for “bigger and better” has reached into every facet of our lives, into education, travel, physical desire, thoughts, and choice of words. I know I find myself frequently reaching out for expansive, cheerful, catchy, words.

Sagittarius is about higher education. Our universities are overwhelming students with bigger, and so-called better education. Is it better for the student’s education or the university’s pockets? Have expectations become unrealistic just to compete with other countries (Sagittarius) or cultures (also Sagittarius)? So many students end up partying anyway, which Sagittarius likes to do. If the qualifications are so high, how do they graduate? This must be frustrating for teachers.

Will Pluto in Capricorn correct this imbalance? Will a diploma alone get you a job? Will businesses go back to hands-on training? A few companies already have this policy, and some are charging for the training.

Capricorn is about downsizing. Will we see smaller companies with more control? If you own your own business, you know your business depends on the quality of your workers, and you won’t easily cave-in to “good-ol-boy” hiring. (This is a term used in the US for hiring someone connected to a friend. This is also known as country club hiring.) Capricorn may like knowing the right people, but only if there is a reward in return.

The eclipse on 3/18/07 (EDT) is making a square to Pluto in Sagittarius. New Moon eclipses are about beginnings, but there is no light, so we must founder in the dark, and use inner and higher guidance, especially with the eclipse in the sign Pisces. Will the eclipse help us realize the dream, or will its square give us a wake-up call? Are we being prepared for Pluto's entrance into Capricorn?

Blogging tip: you'll drive more traffic to your site by choosing words that attract attention. What a conundrum - truth or traffic.

The Progressed Sun and Solar Transits Part 2

From My Notebook on the Planets

Your latest astrology lesson

In part one of this series on the progressed Sun, I talked about the meaning of the Sun and the effects of the progressed Sun.

In this article, Part 2, I explain the effects of the yearly movement of the transiting Sun to the natal and progressed Sun.

The Sun is related to vitality, the ability to be healthy, and to purpose and goals.

For those new to astrology, the transiting Sun refers to the Sun that we see every day when we look out in the sky, not the Sun in the chart. The Sun in the chart is called the natal Sun.

The Natal Sun

The transiting Sun moves through all twelve signs of the zodiac in a given year. As it travels through the signs, it will make contacts to the natal sun several times for good or bad. Have you ever noticed that certain months seem to attract similar events year after year? Have you noticed that some months are busy or hectic, while other months are quiet and things run smoothly? It is important to calculate the movement of the Sun through the chart to determine times of ease and times of challenge.

The Conjunction - The Solar Return

Every year, the transiting Sun makes a conjunction to the natal Sun (the Solar Return) on the birthday. However, because the movement of the Sun is not the same as the yearly calendar, this contact may vary by a few hours, or a few days, either before or after the birthday.

Most people actually feel a little down at their birthday - lethargic, exhausted, cranky, maudlin. etc. This is not caused by all the partying, it’s the intensity of the conjunction. Think of the conjunction as a renewal, a new birth, (births are tiring). Those with the Sun in Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius (where the Sun is dignified) may not feel the renewal as exhausting.

Good Aspects - Sextiles and Trines

Once the birthday is over, there are other contacts to consider. The Sun makes four good aspects during the year, two sextiles and two trines. The sextiles occur two months before and after the birthday. Sextiles are upbeat times of opportunity. The trines occur four months before and after the birthday. Trines are a time of flow and ease; things are done without much effort. Ancient astrologers considered them too easy and very unproductive, thus they were often thought of as evil. If you don't do something to activate the trines, the benefits will just pass on by. You have to get up off the couch and do something. Put those feet down and move.

Hard Aspects - Squares and Oppositions

The Sun makes two squares and one opposition every year.

For some people, these are difficult times; they bring mood swings, anger, irritation, anxiety, or depression, energy is low causing illness. Exhaustion sets in and you may need more sleep.

The squares occur three months before or after the birthday. Squares are a time of friction, and you have to work something out on an inner level.

The opposition occurs six months after the birthday. The opposition is more of an outer aspect, a time of awareness, and it will involve other people. The opposition is also a tiring time.

In spite of the fact that the squares and oppositions are difficult, they are beneficial in that they force us to do something and go after goals.

The Transiting Sun and the Progressed Sun

We've discussed the transits to the natal Sun, but transits to the progressed Sun are also important.

Aspects to the progressed Sun are subtle and psychological. It’s easy to get in a rut with the effects of the transiting Sun year after year, but the progressed Sun pulls us out of our ruts, because unlike the natal Sun, there will be several changes.

As the transiting Sun makes its yearly revolution, it makes good and bad contacts to the progressed Sun and the meaning of these contacts changes over time. Watch for the entrance of the progressed Sun into a new sign, or a new house. The mode and element changes when the progressed Sun enters a new sign, and this affects the meaning of the aspect. With a house change, a new area of life is affected.

Don’t worry, we have plenty of time to adjust to these changes; most shifts are gradual. We get approximately 30 years to adjust to the Sun in a new sign, and several years for the houses.

Mapping out the Transits of the Sun

Look at your chart, and map out the yearly transits of the Sun to the natal and progressed Sun. Determine the months of vitality and success, and the months when you will slow down or have more challenges.

When you are plotting out the movement of the Sun, don’t forget to notice what else is going on. For instance, if the Sun is making a contact at the same time as a solstice, equinox, eclipse, retrograde, or major transit, this makes a big difference as to how the transit will affect you that particular year.

In the next article on progressions, I’ll give more examples of the progressed Sun and examine a few charts.

Wild Hogs and Fire Pigs

The comedy Wild Hogs was the biggest moneymaker in the US this past weekend. This was a big surprise to the critics, the reviews were terrible. (Lately it seems that bad reviews and bad conduct get more attention and make more money for the entertainment industry, the wilder the better for finances.)

Click here to see my recent article on John Travolta and a clip of his dancing in his Wild Hog get-up.

This is no surprise – this is the Chinese Year of the Pig (hog, boar), The Year of the Pig started on February 18, 2007. Other pig years, 1911, 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995.

Pigs are sincere and thoughtful, modest and shy. They try to be reliable and not let anyone down. They prefer familiar surroundings, but they know what they want and will travel anywhere to get there, specifically if they get to go to the country. They love their families and are fun loving, but prefer a few close friends. They’re hard workers and somewhat materialistic.

For the most part, they’re easy going. They can be pig headed, and while they listen to advice, it goes in one ear and out the other, and they make their own decisions.

They don’t like arguments, and will do anything to avoid confrontation and would rather withdraw. Don't let their complacency fool you, at times they have quite a temper; run for the hills, or cover your ears if you cross them.

2007 is the year of the Fire Pig, sounds like Wild Hogs to me.

Lunar Eclipse and Other News

I want to correct the broken link on my article that listed some eclipse blogs. I checked the links before I posted, and they worked. Today, I was told I had a broken link to Lynn Hayes website, Astrodynamics. Sorry about that, I'll blame it on Mercury Retrograde.

She's done another post on the eclipse, so you get two wonderful articles instead of one.

How is Your Progressed Sun Affecting You?

From My Notebook on the Planets

Since the upcoming eclipse is well taken care of in the many blogs, I’m going to choose a different topic – the progressed Sun.

If you want to read about the lunar eclipse there are several good articles on other blogs.

Astrodynamics
Silverwheel Astrology
Lunar Tunes

Other links are on the sidebar.

The Progressed Sun

In astrology, there is a movement of the planets called progression. This is considered a symbolic movement of the planets; the movement does not happen in clock time. The easiest way to compute a progression is to use a software program or consult an ephemeris. When computing a progression in an ephemeris, one calendar day is equal to one year. Since the Sun moves approximately one degree a day, the progressed Sun moves about one degree per year. If you were born with the Sun at 10 degrees of Leo, when you are 16 the progressed Sun is approximately 26 degrees Leo.

The other planets move as well. The Moon is the fastest and moves about 12+ degrees per day, and thus the progressed Moon moves about 12-14 degrees per year. Mercury and Venus may move faster or slower than the Sun depending on the retrograde cycle. Mars is slower than the Sun. The outer planets seldom change more than a degree.

Once the progressed Sun moves out of the birth sign, it remains in a sign for 28-32 years. Unless someone lives to be over 100, there are usually three to four sun-sign changes in a lifetime.

Sabian Symbols

The Sun gives us information about our identity. Just about everyone is aware of the meaning of his or her sun-sign.

The degree of the Sun gives more information. Sabian Symbols are a good way to interpret a specific degree. Sabian Symbols are an interpretation of the 360 degrees of the zodiac using symbols, images, and psychological interpretations. For instance, 6 Gemini is given the Sabian Symbol of “drilling for oil. Try to figure out what the image means, I think you'll surprise yourself on how accurate you are. I'll post the answer in my next article on progressions. In most books on Sabian Symbols, the image is the same, but the interpretation varies slightly.

When using Sabian Symbols, the degree is always rounded up to the next degree. For instance, 2 Capricorn 17 minutes is rounded up to 3 Capricorn.

The Natal and Progressed Sun

The progressed Sun is another layer of the identity.

The degree of the natal Sun tells us how familiar we will become with the natal sun-sign. The degree indicates the amount of time we have to work with the sun-sign before the major change into the next sign, and this is where the progressed Sun steps in.

If someone is born in early degrees of a sign, they have many years to become familiar with the energy of the sign. If they are born in late degrees, they are faced with the energy of a new identity in just a few years. As most of us know, identity is established in the first years of life. (Some experts say four; others say seven.)

For instance, if someone is born at 2 degrees Gemini, they have around 28 years to develop Gemini traits. However, anyone born at 29 + Gemini will receive an influx of Cancer energy when the Sun progresses into Cancer in the first year of life. A parent may brush off attitude changes by assuming it is the emergence of personality, but astrologers know better. The late degrees help explain why people at the end of the sign strongly exhibit the traits of the next sign.

In addition, how easily the person adjusts to the change depends on the mode of the sign. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) do not like change. A person with an early degree of Taurus is going to have a difficult time adjusting to progressed Gemini. Late Taurus will have some problems, but not as much as early Taurus. Cardinal and mutable signs are a lot more amenable to change.

Another thing to consider is the age of the person when the progressed Sun changes. The teen years are hard enough, but with an added identity change, this presents quite a bit of chaos. For example, a person with a Pisces sun-sign who changes to progressed Aries in the teen years will have a stronger identity crisis.

If this concept is not in your astrological toolkit, make sure you add it, and if you have some examples, post them in the comments section. I'll discuss them in my posts in this series.

The next post will be about the effects of the transiting Sun to the natal and progressed Sun.

Here are links to three good Sabian Symbol books.

Saturn Rocks

Saturn is separating from an opposition to Neptune. This is the second contact for this opposition. The last contact will be 6/25/07. On my post the other day, I gave you a musical example of Saturn's opposition to Neptune.

Saturn is about aging and Neptune is about dance. Here’s a dancing clip.

Age is one of the big fears on our planet. The fear of aging comes out in different ways. One is the struggle with personal aging - excessive exercise, dieting, face-lifts, tummy tucks, hair transplants etc. The other is making fun of other people who are aging.

Another Saturn correspondence is “status quo” - or whatever is accepted and expected by the majority. It's not acceptable for an older person to move like this in public.

Saturn is uptight and doesn't like the “moves” in this clip. Saturn would rather have a cotillion, or a perfectly lined up “line-dance". A square dance is about as far over the edge as Saturn will go. Neptune in Aquarius wants something modern, eclectic, and a little on the erotic side of dreamy. Neptune in Aquarius doesn't care about starched collars and being buttoned-up. Neptune wants to flow and swing. Saturn judges the dance and shouts "immoral"! Neptune says, "it's just movement."

Saturn is a judge and brings out criticism. The following clip brings prejudice out of the closet with many negative comments about aging. But the majority of people said John Travolta was fabulous.

It shows me that you can have the “moves” at any age. Don’t hang up your dancing shoes just because someone says you’re “over the hill”. Whether it is ballroom dancing, or moving and shaking, it’s all dance, and dance is supposed to make you feel good.

Don't be Saturnine; have fun, laugh, get with the beat. People have been dancing to drumbeats for ages (Saturn). Saturn is an earthy planets so maybe it's not so bad for Saturn after all. We'll be forced to deal with the issues of aging and fun when Pluto goes into Capricorn early next year.

Wishing You Magic and Miracles
